Nissan Skyline R33 GT-R V-Spec

Super HICAS Rear Wheel Steering

The R33 carries on the “GT-R” tradition after R32 Skyline production ended in 1994. Released in January 1995, the R33 is probably the most underrated in the R32, R33, R34 family, mainly due to its “love it or hate it” looks, but those aerodynamic looks were shaped using the latest in CAD (computer-aided design).

While the 2.6L RB26DETT twin-turbo engine and ATTESA 4 wheel drive is carried over with improvements and now Super HICAS rear-wheel steering introduced, the R33 is also the most comfortable to drive having more interior room than its predecessor and the use of higher quality materials inside.

If you’re wondering about its racing achievements the R33 is also the first car to break and hold the production car lap record at the Nürburgring, the first car to crack the eight-minute barrier. It wasn’t some factory ringer, either: BestMotoring took a stab at recreating the lap and managed a very close 8:01.72. At the 1995 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a Nismo-fielded R33 finished in the top ten overall, beating Ferrari F40 LMs and McLaren F1 GTRs.

For many, it IS the best overall GT-R ever made.
